The town of Coyhaique is located in the Aysen region of Chile, approximately 800 miles south of Chile’s capital Santiago, by the Eastern slope of the Southern Andes. With only 55,000 inhabitants and a total of 105,000 for the entire Aysen region, it boasts one of the lowest population densities in the country. Lodging for this program is based at a beautiful and well appointed lodge close to the town of Coyhaique, in Chilean Patagonia. With five spacious, comfortable guest rooms featuring two queen beds and a full bath. Sliding doors lead you onto an ample private deck to take in the beautiful vistas and the surrounding countryside. The lodge’s chef and attentive staff will make your stay a memorable one.
Brown and rainbow trout were introduced to the waters of the Coyhaique region more than 60 years ago. The ideal conditions of the local waters flowing from high plateaus, temperate rainforests or glaciers of the Andes, have nurtured the development of abundant and healthy populations of wild fish.
Coyhaique is situated at the center of the largest river drainage in the region covering a total of 4,500 square miles. This privileged location allows our guests to enjoy many great rivers such as the Simpson, Mañihuales, Aysen, Ñireguao, Huemules, Blanco, and Emperador Guillermo and other less known streams.
The waters of the Coyhaique area, with their prolific insect life, offer ample opportunities to experience the best in dry fly fishing. We emphasize waded sight fishing. During a typical week, the Mañihuales and Simpson rivers also offer great opportunities for float & waded fishing. Smaller tributaries provide exciting alternatives for sight fishing, while the lakes and lagoons are great options for exciting half day fishing sessions when Caddis or Dragonflies are hatching. Fish here have an abundant variety of food from hatches, terrestrials, nymphs, crustaceans and minnows. The first thing an angler notices is the vitality and power of these fish. In addition to our fishing, guests will also have available a wide variety of non-angling activities such as horseback riding, bird watching, hiking, scenic float trips, guided tours (by vehicle or horseback) to visit the Gauchos (Patagonia’s cowboy) at work.
A typical fishing day starts with a delicious breakfast at the lodge between 8:00 or 8:30 a.m. You will leave between 9:00 or 9:30 am and fish until 1:00 – 1:30 p.m. Your guide will then prepare a stream-side picnic lunch. Fishing will resume after lunch and you will fish until 6:30 or 7:30 p.m. depending on your preference. During the week, we will take advantage of the variety of waters available and fish as many different rivers as possible, fishing larger rivers, streams and spring creeks. Typically, guests will experience three days fishing from boats plus three days of waded fishing.
Additionally, there are several remote and lesser known, but equally spectacular streams, spring creeks and more than a dozen smaller lakes. Pristine, clear streams offer varied fishing, great dry fly action, and challenging sight fishing in both streams and still water. We prioritize dry fly fishing, but when surface action is slow, streamers and nymphs are very productive. The great quantity of waters available will provide our guests with a variety of quality fishing throughout the fishing season. The fishing season starts in mid October and continues through early May.
